China Heavyweight is Yung Chang's sequel after Up-Yang's success in 2008. In Central China, the Master coach recruits poor rural teenagers and transforms them into a Western boxing champion. With hard work and discipline, these boys and girls are older, trained in boxing and lifestyle. They are full of Olympic dreams, hoping to become China's next amateur heroes. But drawing on professionalism also puts them on their shoulders. Their coach hopes to make a layered return in the final pro-battle so they can show them the way.

There are dramatic choices in front of top students when they graduate – should they fight for collective good practice as hobbyists or for themselves and for their own personal victory as professionals? It is a metaphor for the choices that everyone now faces in the new China.
