The announcement of Australian coach Ante Milicic before the World Cup was assured: they wanted to qualify for the quarterfinals, they also have the stuff of the semifinals. In the impressive 3-2 (1: 2) win over Brazil, his players let the words follow their actions. It seemed like the game after a 2: 0 for the Brazilians already decided.
At first, it was the stars of the Brazilians who took the lead. First, Marta scored with a penalty, then Cristiane increased to 2: 0. Caitlin Foord however shortened the score before half-time, Chloe Logarzo equalized after the break and Monica's goal sealed the game.
It was a quick match in Montpellier, where the Australians provided steam early on. The team, which had lost the opening match against Italy with surprise 1: 2, was under pressure and willing to bear it. After 25 minutes of play, referee Esther Staubli and the video evidence had already seen an Australian handball.
The penalty was then back on the other side – although here a Brazilian played a role in the match. Marta, who was beaten in the first match against Jamaica, turned around. Cristiane made a good effort to raise the score to 2-0, but the match was decided. But Australia responded with a hissing half-time, winning the door after this brave performance. It was the first time that Brazil had cleared its match sheet after ten World Cup qualifiers in which the team had played zero.
After the change, the Australians again lobbied. Brazil, who had replaced Marta at half-time, was barely relieved and conceded substantial compensation. Logarzo put a cross in the area, allowing all players and goalkeeper Barbara to score.
And this has become even more bitter for Brazil. In the 68th minute, defender Monica dug a center in his own net. Behind her was Australian striker Sam Kerr. But because it had no influence, which is forbidden by the rules, success nevertheless counted. And the surprise was perfect.
In the group where the other two teams, Italy and Jamaica, will meet on Friday, everything is open. Brazil, Italy and Australia all have three points.
