The nomadic Oroqen people are among 56 ethnic groups officially recognized by the People's Republic of China.
Originally from the Khingan mountain range, many were resettled in Heilongjiang Province, northeast China, where the government provided modern housing.
Many were encouraged to abandon their traditional lifestyle, including Oroqen's approach to hunting, which the authorities believe is at odds with the efforts to preserve the environment.
And after decades of assimilation, Oroqen's unique language is also on the verge of extinction.
