Is there a poker sensation regarding the broadcast rights of the 2024 European Football Championship? According to a report from the "Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung", Deutsche Telekom has obtained the rights to broadcast the 51 matches of the 2024 European Football Championship. The "FAZ" refers to the circles of the UEFA. Even the newspaper "Bild" has reported a similar agreement, but retains a little – the decision should therefore fall only in the coming days.
On German television, it would be a novelty. Previously, the big football chains were still on ARD and ZDF, with the exception of some games in which RTL or Sat.1 held the rights. With the acquisition of EM, Telekom would undoubtedly strengthen its television offering, Magenta TV. After all, the tournament is one of the biggest hit odds. Already, Telekom broadcasts on Magenta TV many sports broadcasts, including the 3. Football League.
Completely behind the payment barrier, the European Championship will not disappear, as some games are on the so-called TV protection list. All matches involving the German national team as well as the opening match, semi-finals and final must be offered to spectators without encryption and at no additional cost. Not excluded for Telekom to seek a sublicense for ARD and ZDF or a private broadcaster.
An official confirmation is still pending. Neither Deutsche Telekom nor the public broadcasters have yet commented on the state of negotiations. The pan-European European Championship will be presented again to ARD and ZDF next year, with RTL holding the rights to the qualifying matches.
