ARD and ZDF before the European Football Championship
| Reading time: 2 minutes
For the first time, a big football tournament will no longer be presented in the public sector. ARD and ZDF are going to the home European Championship in 2024 seemingly empty.
ATRD and ZDF have reportedly lost the battle for the television rights of the 2024 European Football Championship. This brings the "FAZ", referring to the circles of the European Football Union (UEFA). According to the association, she had sold the broadcasting rights of the continental tournament to the telecommunications sector.
This would be the first time that public broadcasters participating in a major football tournament such as the European Championship or the World Cup went out empty. And that's only the home tournament in Germany.
Where games can be seen in five years, remains to be determined. The telecoms have Magenta TV its own pay TV channel, which can only be received via the Internet. Magenta Sport already offers live matches from the third division football league or the highest basketball and ice hockey divisions in Germany.
Outbid at the Olympics
According to the Broadcasting Treaty, however, the opening match, the two semi-finals, the final as well as all German participation matches in the World Cup or European Championship must be freely available . This could regulate the telecom on sublicenses, which would sell them to an issuer. ARD and ZDF had already been nominated for the Olympic Games from 2018 to 2024, but had agreed with the Discovery rights holder to sublicense.
This should not necessarily be public law, even a private broadcaster like RTL would be possible. The inhabitants of Cologne already hold the rights for qualifying matches for major tournaments by 2022.
Neither Uefa nor Telekom wanted to make a statement on Friday afternoon. ZDF has announced a timely statement. The EM 2024 takes place in Berlin, Munich, Düsseldorf, Stuttgart, Cologne, Hamburg, Leipzig, Dortmund, Gelsenkirchen and Frankfurt.
