Crisis, what crisis? On the six goals in the Wolfsburg Cup RB Leipzig can follow "incredible" eight rounds in the Bundesliga. Against the indisputable Mainzer, Julian Nagelsmann's team already plays a frenzy before the break. Still outstanding: the national striker Timo Werner.
After the historic victory at RB Leipzig, Julian Nagelsmann ran first to the losers. The coach gave his colleague and friend Sandro Schwarz a pat on the back, but it was only a small consolation. In the # 8; 0 (5: 0) Leipzig showed Mainz completely overloaded in several stages – the victory could have been even higher if RB had not returned a little back.
"It's incredible, we could barely understand what's going on here," said Leipzig's outstanding striker Timo Werner, who scored three goals for the club's biggest victory in Leipzig (30, 48, 87), to Sky. He had already scored twice in the 6-1 win of the week at VfL Wolfsburg, and now RB also lost in the league and impressively ended his mini-crisis. These two victories are "already an affirmation", said Werner: "It was fun, but I prefer to win eight times 1: 0 compared to once 8: 0."
Not only did Werner excel, Leipzig was superior to the full-fledged guests. Marcel Sabitzer (5th), Christopher Nkunku (35.), Marcel Halstenberg (38.), Yussuf Poulsen (44.) and Nordi Mukiele (50.) scored the other goals. The fans of Leipzig sang "Oh, how good it is", while the Mainz block was emptied long before the final whistle. However, Black sent his players to the few remaining fans in the arena. They should try to explain the highest defeat in the club's history – which has only had some success.
"We let ourselves be beaten, the first losses of the ball broke our necks," admitted Mainz's goalkeeper Robin Zentner. After the fifth goal he convinced each teammate to become aware: "We must quickly check this and learn from it, never give up".
Sabitzer's early opening goal allowed the Leipziger in front of 38.517 spectators to clear up the wind. Mainz, who had played with confidence in the first minutes, was increasingly pushed into his own half. Werner (10th and 12th) and Sturmpartner Poulsen (14th and 17th) quickly had a good chance, which Leipzig did not use effectively. This was almost avenged when the Mainz defender Alexander Hack failed after a corner with a header from brilliant Peter Gulacsi. After that, however, RB was on the trigger. After a cross from Nkunku Werner pressed the ball for the first time over the line, five minutes later, the national player served the Frenchman, who increased with a 3: 0 distance shot. And then to defender Halstenberg was permission to enter the report.
Even the change of tactics does not help
The coach of the FSV Black reacted to the Leipzig assault and changed striker Adam Szalai with midfielder Danny Latza. The effect was limited, even before the half-time whistle Poulsen increased to 5: 0.
The hope of Mainz, that the Leipzig would come back after a pause, was not met. Werner and Mukiele showed no mercy at the end of the gate, and even after the 7-0 they cheerfully played the hosts ahead. "One is still, one enters again", sounded from the ranks.
