The application for the Invictus Games has taken a new step. Soon, the decision should fall. The chances of Düsseldorf are good.
The Bundestag has, by a large majority, decided to run for the Invictus 2022 Games – Düsseldorf would be the venue even if the inactivity of the war really came to Germany. About 40 million euros would be spent on the federal government for the Paralympic sporting event for wounded soldiers, which was held for the first time in 2014 in London. The games were an initiative of the British prince Harry.
Only the leftist party has voted in the Bundestag against competition in various sports, which also has a political dimension: it is intended to express gratitude for the soldiers injured on the ground. With this logic, the spokesperson for the FDP's defense in the Bundestag, the leader of the FDP Düsseldorf, Marie-Agnes Strack-Zimmermann, stands out from the competition.
The decision on the venue should be announced, Düsseldorf is offered good opportunities. A delegation, including Mayor Thomas Geisel (SPD), presented the application in September in the British capital. The city council has already accepted.
The number of participants in the Invictus Games is constantly increasing. Approximately 700 athletes, some of whom are severely disabled, will participate, accompanied by a team of military doctors, psychologists, physiotherapists and their families. Because the problem for the sites is high, there is financial support. Düsseldorf should not incur any costs.
The Invictus Games are to be held in the Merkur Spiel Arena and its associated sports park, as well as for the opening and closing ceremonies of the ISS Dome. Athletics, indoor rowing, weightlifting, bike lane racing, sit-down volleyball, swimming, wheelchair basketball, wheelchair rugby and shooting. the bow are the sports at the heart of the Invictus Games.
The first Invictus Games were held at the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park in London in 2014. After that, the venues were Orlando, Toronto, Sydney and this year in The Hague. As a competitor for the event of 2022, the Canadian city of Victoria is in the running.
