DAB + digital radio will be available in all new cars from the end of 2020 in Germany. This is what the Federal Council decided on Friday. But DAB + is not controversial despite the technical advantages such as better transmission quality.
From 21 December 2020, radios on new vehicles and new fixed radios with displays must allow reception and reproduction of DAB +. DAB is the acronym for Digital Audio Broadcasting. Critics of DAB + believe that in the digitalization of broadcasting we must immediately focus on Internetstreaming. Supporters point to a greater variety of channels and better sound quality.
Supporters hope for accelerated digitalization of the radio
The supporters of DAB + now hope in particular from the radio attendant adopted a great impulse for digital radio. With the modification of the law on telecommunications, the German legislator transposes the regulations of the EU on the cooperation of various radio reception systems in national law. The Bundestag had previously adopted the bill on October 17th.
The digital Minister of State at the Chancellor, Dorothee Bär of the CSU, stated that the DAB + guided by the law is now no longer possible. "The amendment greatly accelerates the digitization of the radio". This will improve the distribution and acceptance of DAB + throughout Germany.
Even rural areas covered
Heike Raab, a member of the SPD and media secretary of the State Chancellery of Rhineland-Palatinate, also welcomed the decision: "Quality and widespread diffusion convince everywhere, even in rural areas".
With the now uniform regulation at national level, listeners from all over Germany have benefited from a greater selection of programs and a better sound. "Producers, retailers and program providers have the planning security necessary to convert their equipment portfolio."
