British justice refuses to release Assange, who fears he may be infected

British justice refused on Wednesday to release under judicial control the founder of Wikileaks Julian Assange, who fears to contract the new coronavirus in the prison where he is detained near London.

Despite Julian Assange's health problems, which in particular in the past would include lung problems, according to her defense, the judge refused to place her under house arrest on an electronic bracelet. She said there were "serious reasons to think" that he might not appear at future summons. She stressed that he was not the only fragile prisoner in the Belmarsh high security prison.

A hundred people infected in his prison

Its support committee claims that a hundred people among the staff at Belmarsch prison, where Assange is being held, are ill with symptoms of Covid-19.

Washington is requesting the extradition of the 48-year-old Australian, who is being prosecuted by the American justice system for espionage after the publication from 2010 of a mass of confidential documents on American military and diplomatic activities, notably in Iraq and Afghanistan.

After four days of hearing a month ago, British justice must continue from May 18 the examination of the extradition request of Assange, who faces up to 175 years in prison in the United States.
