Google’s Arts & Culture branch is launching a new online project to highlight the impact of climate change on world historic heritage.

The idea is to document in depth how the rising sea, coastal erosion or extreme weather conditions risk destroying the natural heritage we admire on Earth. Between 3D visualization, 360-degree videos, photo galleries and interviews with local communities and specialists, the project is worth as much for the look as for the awareness it arouses.

Named "The Heritage on the Edge", the initiative focuses on five UNESCO World Heritage sites: the moai of Easter Island, the old and new city of Edinburgh, the coasts of Kilwa Kisiwani Island in Tanzania, the Bagerhat Mosque in Bangladesh and the Pre-Columbian Chan Chan archaeological site in the Peruvian desert.

Available both on the official website and via the mobile application, The Heritage on the Edge was created in partnership with the International Council of Museums (Icomos) and CyArk, a Californian NGO specializing in the digitization of the heritage heritage.

The three entities have thus brought together a set of terrestrial and aerial photographs, photogrammetric surveys and scans produced using Lidar techniques to make this project an almost exhaustive content intended for the general public. We can thus digitally explore these monuments thanks to interactive 3D models and Street View tours or link the numerous photo galleries.
