Hanoi (hooly News) – Vietnam, which seemed to have succeeded in curbing the coronavirus, recorded its first death from the disease on Friday, a blow to the country which has been promoting for months its policy in controlling the epidemic .

It is about “a 70-year-old man residing in Hoi An (center), tested positive at the beginning of the week”, specified official media.

No case of local transmission had been detected for 99 days, from mid-April to mid-July.

The virus reappeared last weekend in Da Nang, a popular tourist resort in the center of the country. A 57-year-old man has tested positive and the origin of his contamination remains unknown at this time. Since then, the epidemic has spread to several cities, including Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City.

In one week, some 150 new patients were listed across Vietnam, including “82 on Friday alone”, a daily record since the start of this health crisis, authorities said.

The latter were quick to react.

A field hospital with several hundred beds is being set up in Da Nang. “Elite medical experts” have been deployed in the city along with a thousand people, including medical professionals and the military, said Dr Tran Nhu Duong, deputy director of the National Institute of Epidemiology.

The government also fears that the virus is growing in Hanoi.

Some 21,000 residents of the capital, who recently stayed at the resort, have been tested. Bars have been closed and large gatherings banned since Wednesday.

The majority of the 1.1 million inhabitants of Da Nang are for their part invited to leave their homes only in case of absolute necessity and connections to reach the city have been interrupted.

The World Health Organization (WHO) has repeatedly highlighted the speed with which Hanoi was reacting in an attempt to control the epidemic.

Shortly after the first patients were detected in January, Vietnam, which shares a long porous border with China, followed a strict quarantine policy and tens of thousands of people found themselves in camps guarded by the military in the four corners of the country.

The authorities have also set up a rigorous follow-up of the infected people by relying on the networks used for decades by the communist regime to relay the action of the party in the districts.

430,000 people have been screened since the start of the crisis thanks to a virological test, the health ministry said on Monday.

Building on its success in the face of the coronavirus, bars and restaurants had reopened and many Vietnamese had gone on vacation on domestic flights, especially to Da Nang, taking advantage of promotions intended to support the country’s tourism industry, in the midst of the debacle with the pandemic.

With the new cases, the country now has 546 infected people.
