Astronomers are observing the sky in search of an extremely unusual lunar eclipse, which began Sunday night.

During the show, known as the "super-blood wolf moon", the moon seems to glow while appearing brighter and closer to Earth than normal.

The event was initially visible from North and South America, as well as in parts of Western Europe. In some parts of the United Kingdom, clouds have obscured the view.

The next total lunar eclipse is expected in two years, May 26, 2021.

"A bit of sunlight is refracted by the earth's atmosphere and reaches the moon, tilting around the Earth," said Walter Freeman, assistant professor at Syracuse University, in the United States. State of New York.

"This small amount of red light still brightens the Moon enough for us to see."

The rare celestial event takes its name from the fact that the Moon will be close to Earth, while it will be barely larger than usual in the sky.

The "wolf" part comes from the name given to the full moons in January – "moon wolves".
