Thai politics has taken many bizarre turns in recent years. The submission of the older sister of King Vajiralongkorn as candidate for the prime minister is one of the strangest and turns politics upside down.

Princess Ubolratana Rajakanya Sirivadhana Barnavadi is the candidate for the Thai Raksa Chart party, closely associated with the former Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra.

The opponents of Mr. Thaksin have long declared him and his allies anti-royal.

In one fell swoop, the pro-Thaksin side disarmed that cargo and obtained a photogenic royal personality to decorate his campaign posters.

Mrs. Ubolratana is one of the more colorful members of the royal family. She played with films, was sung on stage with a Thai top pop group and is flamboyant in fashion. She portrays herself as more down-to-earth and accessible than other royals.
She is also known as a good relationship with Mr. Thaksin, who lives in exile. Her relationship with her brother, King Vajiralongkorn, is less clear.
