The SD Association consortium that is developing the SD memory card format has revealed the latest version of its high performance cards, the SD Express 8.0. At the maximum of the standard, the data transfer bus of the cards will reach the lightning speed of 3.94 GB / s thanks to the use of two PCI Express 4.0 lines.
This kind of speed is cut for the arrival of the 8K wave, from smartphones already available to cameras / consumer video. If professional recording devices already use fast memory cards (CF Express, etc.), SD is de facto LE standard for the general public. The proof being that the physical form of SD Express cards is the same as "normal" SD cards and that backward compatibility is guaranteed. Only changes the number of contactors (pins).
For now, only full format cards have been detailed, specifications for cards in Micro SD format should arrive later in the year.
The SD Express standard will be available in the three types of cards corresponding to the three capacity bands – SD from 2 to 32 GB, SDXC from 32 GB to 2 TB and SDUC from 2 TB to 128 TB. Their theoretical availability is for the end of 2020 / early 2021, but the cameras supporting them should arrive, at best, in 2021.
