The video is impressive. In Tignes, Sunday, March 4, the snowboarder Thomas Kray risked an off-piste descent and filmed the scene with a camera attached to his helmet. For almost a minute, everything seems to be going well, but suddenly an avalanche is triggered. The snowboarder falls and seems carried away by the snowflake and resurfaced a few seconds later, obviously without damage.
Saved by his airbag and his helmet
Asked by Euronews about his "experience", Thomas Kray explained that being buried was "as if you were under water" and that there was not much you could do when you found yourself in such a situation. The snowboarder said he was scared when he realized what was happening but he was able to calm down after activating his safety equipment. It is also his airbag and his helmet that allowed him to escape unscathed.
In less than a week, nine people died in avalanches in the Alps and Pyrenees. Since the beginning of the season, 26 people have died in snowflows. The record is already heavier than in the previous two seasons.
