A few hours after the military coup in Turkey, President Rejeb Tayyip Erdogan called on his supporters to stay in public squares until the situation returns to normal.

When addressing a large number of his supporters in Istanbul, Erdogan described developments in the capital Ankara as a minor disturbance and assured that this would be resolved quickly. He also noted that his government is in charge after the coup attempt. Erdogan added that Turkish Airlines has resumed flights. He said earlier that the military uprising is a reason to clean up the army. He added that operations are under way to arrest many officers, including senior commanders. Erdogan described the attempted coup as a betrayal and accused the supporters of the US-based opposition figure Fethullah Gulen for the act. In the meantime Gulen has issued a statement in which he strongly condemns the attempted coup.
